Wilus1969: The editors of the "New Oxford Book of Carols" tell us that “it is generally accepted” that Sylvester was the antiquary William Sandys (see nos. 4 and 8 of the Calendar). To which I want to add a Wikipedia-style [by whom?]. 3/

Wilus1969: William Sandys, whom we have met before, contributes to the trend with his “Christmas-Tide: its History, Festivities, and Carols” in 1852. The cover, designed by his brother, makes use of familiar Christmas decorative motifs. 2/

Wilus1969: This time Sandys credits the antiquarian William Chappell with the musical arrangements, and the results are certainly somewhat less inept than in his previous book. Only somewhat, though. 5/

Wilus1969: Medieval sources provided a rich seam of material for carol collectors. William Sandys had included many medieval carols in his 1833 book, and a further volume was published by the Society in 1847. 4/

Wilus1969: An Advent Calendar of Carol Books, no. 4. William Sandys (1792- 1874) is so often coupled with Davies Gilbert in carol literature that you might be forgiven for thinking that "Gilbert and Sandys" worked together like Gilbert and Sullivan. 1/
