Micah Clarke (1889), one of Arthur Conan Doyle's lesser-known works of historical fiction, is based on the Monmouth Rebellion, also known as the Pitchfork Rebellion, of 1685. The book contains Clarke's statement as made to his three grandchildren Joseph, Gervas, and Reuben during the hard winter of 1734. He wants his grandchildren to have an idea of the fierce and earnest religion which filled not only your own ancestor, but most of those men who were trained in the parliamentary armies.

And of the nations. And, when thus the fight
Faltered and men once bold with faces white
Turned this and that way in excuse to flee,
I only stood, and by the foeman's might
Was overborne and mangled cruelly.
