John Charles Polanyi Books, John Charles Polanyi poetry book Reconstructing Nature Authors: John Hedley Brooke, G. N. Cantor
Publisher: Oxford University Press on Demand
Published Date: 1998
Categories: Religion
This book, first published in the U.K. by TandT Clark, expands on the authors' prestigious Glasgow Gifford Lectures of 1995-6. Brooke and Cantor herein examine the many different ways in which the relationship between science and religion has been presented throughout history. They contend that, in fact, neither science nor religion is reducible to some timeless "essence" - and they deftly criticize the various master-narratives that have been put forward in support of such "essentialist"theses. Along the way, they repeatedly demolish the cliches so typical of popular histories of the science and religion debate, demonstrating the impossibility of reducing these debates to a single narrative, or of narrowing this relationship to a paradigm of conflict.

John Charles Polanyi Books, John Charles Polanyi poetry book One World Authors: John C. Polkinghorne
Publisher: Templeton Foundation Press
Published Date: 2010-06-30
Categories: Religion
Both science and religion explore aspects of reality, providing "a basis for their mutual interaction as they present their different perspectives onto the one world of existent reality," Polkinghorne argues. In One World he develops his thesis through an examination of the nature of science, the nature of the physical world, the character of theology, and the modes of thought in science and theology. He identifies "points of interaction" and points of potential conflict between science and religion. Along the way, he discusses creation, determinism, prayer, miracles, and future life, and he explains his rejection of scientific reductionism and his defense of natural theology.

John Charles Polanyi Books, John Charles Polanyi poetry book The Frontiers of Science & Faith Authors: John Jefferson Davis
Publisher: InterVarsity Press
Published Date: 2002-01-01
Categories: Religion
"What happens when new scientific research meets traditional Christian doctrines? How does the big bang theory fit with Genesis 1:1? What does quantum mechanics have to do with the doctrines of predestination and the omniscience of God? How does the anthropic principle square with a biblical notion of a designed and purposeful universe? What are the implications of the doctrine of redemption in Jesus Christ for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence?" "Addressing these and other questions, John Jefferson Davis brings together a well-informed understanding of current scientific issues with Christian teaching. He demonstrates that the meeting of the frontiers of science with the frontiers of faith calls for a proper relationship with the God of the universe and a humility that acknowledges the fundamental limits of human knowledge."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
Published Date: 2019-04-12
Categories: Religion
In this book John Polkinghorne and Michael Welker explain how they understand faith in the living God. Between them, they offer a "binocular vision from [their] twin perspectives to yield helpful insight in relation to the important issues." Part of the fascination of this book is how two people with such different backgrounds approach central theological questions relating to the faith they both share. Their concerns are truth rather than polemics, reliability rather than simple certainty. They seek to anchor their thought in concrete particulars rather than abstract generalizations. They ask the questions that trouble the inquiring mind, and meet head-on the challenge as well as the reassurances of belief. This second edition provides a new Preface and updated bibliographies.

Andrew Lang Poem
Melville And Coghill - The Place Of The Little Hand
 by Andrew Lang

DEAD, with their eyes to the foe,
Dead, with the foe at their feet;
Under the sky laid low
Truly their slumber is sweet,
Though the wind from the Camp of the
Slain Men blow,
And the rain on the wilderness beat.
