In 1577 France a prominent member of the court of King Henri III murdered his wife under mysterious circumstances. Shortly afterward a group of anonymous poems written about the murder circulated in print. Seven years later, one of those poems, an enigmatic sonnet, appeared on the final page of a controversial edition of poems by the well-known French author, Pierre de Ronsard. Because that edition has been considered unauthorized throughout the years, the mysterious sonnet has rarely been read or examined. This book proposes attributing authorship of the sonnet to Ronsard by investigating numerous historical figures and events associated with the sonnet, the contested, controversial edition of the poems, and the life of the poet himself. Calling attention to a fascinating poem, a turbulent society as well as to forgotten voices by combining intelligent speculation with historical data, His Story, Her Story reopens a literary mystery that has been neglected for centuries.

Available for the first time in English, this is a major work of scholarship, originally published in Geneva in 1969 by a distinguished French historian of the famous Annales school and President of the Institut du Livre. By placing the publishing trade at the center of the study of the intellectual, political, and economic evolution of Europe through examination of the physical evidence, Martin has revolutionized historical narrative. He shows the printed book to be the focus of society's cultural well-being. This is an exhaustive look at the most highly developed book trade of the period, the century from 1598 to 1701 in France. The inquiry is consistently set against the background of international and internal political and religious conflict.

This collection of articles illustrates the intimacy between science and literature, pleasure and sense, excess and moderation that Jean Ceard sought to understand and that he instilled in those who collaborated or studied with him. Readers will discover a cornucopia of scientific joys, drawn from the fields that Jean Ceard explored throughout his career (literature, philosophy, natural sciences, theology, poetry, translation). These seventy-two articles on Renaissance culture bear witness to the intellectual generosity and curiosity of one of the periods most eminent historians."

Lewis Carroll Poem
Life Is But A Dream
 by Lewis Carroll

A boat, beneath a sunny sky
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July

Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear
