Since all that I can ever do for thee
Is to do nothing, this my prayer must be:
That thou mayst never guess nor ever see
The all-endured this nothing-done costs me.

Carl Schultz: "The Last Wish" is a wonderful little poem composed by the author of the infamous line, "It was a dark and stormy night--" Despite the longer and much more popular verses composed by the likes of Tennyson, Longfellow, and Shakespesre, I don't believe I've ever read this particular sentiment expressed anywhere else in Western Literature, although it's a thought familiar to almost all of us. And contrary to the poems brevity, certainly the sentiment has never been expressed quite as well.
