Robert Desnos Books, Robert Desnos poetry book Ghost Ships Authors: Robert McNab
Publisher: Yale University Press
Published Date: 2004
Categories: Art
A moving and spectacular tale of love, jealousy, and exotic travel, centering on three significant figures in the surrealist movement. This book describes the secret journey made by an extraordinary ménage à trois: the painter Max Ernst, Paul Eluard (cofounder of surrealism with André Breton), and Eluard's wife Gala. The author unravels the story of Ernst's love affair with Gala, Eluard's disappearance, Ernst and Gala's pursuit of him, their meeting in Saigon where the love triangle came apart, and the resulting departure of the Eluards, who left Ernst to explore the jungles of French Indochina alone. The impact on the work of both men was profound. As for Gala, she eventually dropped both her lovers for Salvador Dali.

Robert Desnos Books, Robert Desnos poetry book The Automatic Muse Authors: Robert Desnos, Georges Limbour, Michel Leiris
Publisher: Atlas Press
Published Date: 1994
Categories: Fiction
The Automatic Muse collects together four remarkable novels from the early days of Surrealism - the 1920's, when the group was experimenting with "automatic writing" and other methods of "forcing inspiration." Despite, or because of, the methods used in their composition these works are remarkable for the differences between them. They are variously mysterious, comic, astonishing, wildly extravagant. Yet they all share a feeling for the marvellous, and a literary style totally unrestrained by the conventions of "literature." Their potent vitality is an ample demonstration of the Surrealist programme and its belief in "the total liberation of man."

Robert Desnos Books, Robert Desnos poetry book The Punishments of Hell Authors: Robert Desnos
Publisher: Atlas Press (GB)
Published Date: 2017-06-07
Categories: Paris (France)
Written in April/May 1922, this is the first prose work by Robert Desnos. At first it appears to be a sort of roman a clef. All of Desnos's friends in the Paris Dada Movement make their appearance, Andre Breton, Louis Aragon and Benjamin Peret among others. The Dada movement seemed played out, killed off by a mixture of public success, internal dissensions and boredom with the predictability of its scandals. The Punishments of Hell thus lies between Dada and Surrealism. All is confusion at this critical pass when the future seems simultaneously at stake and within one's grasp, and this novel perfectly embodies its modern chaos.

Wilfrid Scawen Blunt Poem
Her Name Liberty
 by Wilfrid Scawen Blunt

I thought to do a deed of chivalry,
An act of worth, which haply in her sight
Who was my mistress should recorded be
And of the nations. And, when thus the fight
Faltered and men once bold with faces white
Turned this and that way in excuse to flee,
I only stood, and by the foeman's might
Was overborne and mangled cruelly.
