John Henry Newman Books, John Henry Newman poetry book On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine Authors: John Henry Newman
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
Published Date: 1962
Categories: Religion
On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine was first published in July, 1859, as an article in the Rambler. It was the immediate cause of great controversy both in Rome and in England. Newman did not withdraw his views, but the article was not reprinted or published in England since that time, and appeared only once in an American journal, Cross Currents. Scholars without access to Rambler archives have had to resort to a German translation, and the ordinary reader has had to rely on brief quotation and heresy. This edition of Newman's essay is the first in any language to contain a collated version of the text published in the Rambler for July, 1859, and the abbreviated and amended version of 1871. The book also contains an extract from The Arians of the Fourth Century, which bears on the same subject and amplifies Newman's views.

In 1854, Father John Henry Newman, future Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, entered the new Catholic University in Dublin as Rector - a post he held for four years. By way of preparation in 1852, Father Newman authored and published On The Scope and Nature of University Education. These eight discourses contained herein are of special interest as a turning point in his long and brilliant career as a leading Catholic theologian. JOHN HENRY CARDINAL NEWMAN (1801-1890) was known as "The Father of The Second Vatican Council" and a - if not the - leading figure in the Church of England. Prior to his conversion to Catholicism in 1845, Cardinal Newman was an outstanding scholar at Oxford possessed of brilliant speaking and writing abilities. His Parochial and Plain Sermons (1834-42) is considered the best sermons in the English language. In A Grammar Of Assent (1870) is his remarkable study on religious knowledge and certainty. Newman was made a Cardinal in 1877.

John Henry Newman Books, John Henry Newman poetry book Roman Catholic Writings on Doctrinal Development Authors: John Henry Newman
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
Published Date: 1997
Categories: Religion
John Henry Newman's decision to become a Roman Catholic was confirmed by his work on one of his major contributions to theology, Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine. Ironically, the writings that brought him into the Catholic Church were viewed so suspiciously by Church officials that from his very first days as a Catholic he experienced distance, avoidance, distrust, and even cynicism in his relationship with the hierarchy. In hope of obtaining an honest and competent critique of his views on the development of doctrine, he conceived the idea of a presentation of his ideas, not in English, but in Latin, and in the style not of a historical essay, but of a Scholastic treatise. The result was De catholici dogmatis evolutione, here translated into the author's native tongue as On The Development of Catholic Dogma

Lewis Carroll Poem
Life Is But A Dream
 by Lewis Carroll

A boat, beneath a sunny sky
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July

Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear
